Quiet Moments

Waking up before the alarm

The house was completely dark when I woke up on the morning of my sister’s wedding. It was five o’clock. The alarm was not supposed to go off for another hour. I tried to go back to sleep, but my brain was already running through the list of floral deliveries.

I got out of bed and went to the kitchen. I did not turn on the main lights. I just used the small lamp over the stove. I sat on a wooden stool and drank a glass of tap water.

That single hour was the only peaceful part of the entire day.

I looked at the boxes of decorations stacked in the corner. The house was entirely silent. By noon, that same kitchen was full of hair stylists, photographers, and nervous relatives asking where to find the scissors. The noise level was incredible. But for that one hour, everything was just quiet potential.

I always tell people to protect a window of silence on the morning of an event. Do not invite your entire family to your hotel room at seven in the morning for bagels. Do not let the makeup artists arrive before the sun is even up.

You need time to be a normal person before you have to put on a heavy dress and perform for a crowd.

Wake up and have a cup of coffee alone. Stare out a window. Do not look at your phone. Do not check the weather forecast for the fourth time. The weather is going to do whatever it wants. Looking at the radar is just a very fast way to give yourself a stomach ache.

There is a very specific kind of mental noise that builds up on a big day. You spend hours sitting in a chair having people pull at your hair and pin your clothes. You are constantly being perceived. People are asking you questions you do not have the answers to.

Starting the day with a completely empty room gives you a small anchor. You need that contrast. When the reception gets loud and your uncle starts complaining about the music volume, you can mentally go back to that quiet kitchen. It reminds you that the chaos is temporary. The event is just a loud room. The quiet always comes back.
